The Jets released Rodgers on Wednesday, NFL.com's Nick Shook reports.
Analysis
The long-expected move became official shortly after the start of the league year. Rodgers is now said to be deciding between signing with the Giants, Steelers or Vikings, although it isn't clear Minnesota has the same level of interest as the other two teams. The Jets, meanwhile are designating Rodgers as a post-June 1 cut, which means they'll carry a $21 million cap hit until that date, at which point the number drops to $14 million. They'll then take a $35 million dead-cap charge in 2026. The Jets are signing QB Justin Fields to replace Rodgers, and they also have Tyrod Taylor under contract through 2025.
Rodgers is expected to reach a decision Wednesday on his next team, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis
Reports suggest Rodgers is deciding between signing with the Giants and Steelers, with some chance of the Vikings getting involved. He won't necessarily sign a contract Wednesday, but the Giants apparently should become aware soon whether he'll join them or not.
Rodgers has emerged as an option for the Steelers, although Pittsburgh is still talking with fellow quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, Adam Schefter oF ESPN reports.
Analysis
Schefter also mentions that the Jets are interested in signing Fields as a replacement for Rodgers, who is set to become a free agent and won't stay in New York unless it's to play for the Giants. The Steelers recently agreed to trade for wideout DK Metcalf, giving them a dangerous pair of downfield targets with receiver George Pickens still on the roster. Pittsburgh would be a good situation for Rodgers, who would be backed by a solid defense and throwing to a pair of talented wideouts. However, the fit will also depend on Pittsburgh's level of interest and willingness to give the 41-year-old a desirable contract.
The Giants are shifting their interest in a potential veteran quarterback to Rodgers, after Matthew Stafford and the Rams agreed to terms on a restructured contract Friday, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Russini reports New York and Rodgers have discussed a union all week at the NFL Scouting Combine. Rodgers' primary interest was in the Rams, per a recent report from Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, but with that option now off the table, the 41-year-old signal-caller will have to consider other possibilities. With the Giants, Rodgers would have the opportunity to pair with a young standout wide receiver in Malik Nabers, who, as a rookie working with a combination of Daniel Jones, Drew Lock. Tommy DeVito and Tim Boyle, managed to put together a 109-1,204-7 receiving line across 15 games in 2024. The team additionally has the available cap space to potentially bring in Davante Adams to join Rodgers, a development both players have expressed interest in. Neither Rodgers nor Adams has yet been let go by the Jets, but their respective releases seem like a foregone conclusion.
Rodgers is interested in playing for the Rams in 2025 and would attempt to bring Davante Adams with him to Los Angeles, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis
Rodgers hasn't yet been let go by the Jets, but he's reportedly already working to find a new team as his release is a foregone conclusion. As for the Rams, there's been a whole lot of trade chatter around Matthew Stafford, with the team and quarterback at odds over his contract. Rodgers would come much cheaper, and trading Stafford could allow the Rams to add premium draft capital. However, at this stage of their respective careers, going from Stafford to Rodgers would have to be considered a downgrade for Sean McVey's offense, even if the cost savings and shorter-term commitment might be appealing. As for Adams, he's also expected to be let go by New York in the coming weeks. With Cooper Kupp headed out the door in L.A., Adams would make sense as a running mate for Puka Nacua. Stafford is the big veteran quarterback domino the rest of the league is waiting on to fall, whether that's a trade or a new deal to stay with the Rams.
Rodgers recently told TMZ that he's more likely to continue to his football career if he can find a good team that really wants him.
Analysis
The Jets have already Rodgers that they're moving in a different direction at quarterback in 2025, and with minimal chance of trade interest, it's only a matter of time until he's released. The teams most likely to consider signing the 41-year-old quarterback aren't the ones generally considered to be "good," and Rodgers may end up looking at a short list of suitors even if he's flexible on his stated criteria. A couple of the teams that theoretically might have interest would probably prefer to see what happens in free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft before settling for Rodgers as their Week 1 starter.
The Jets officially informed Rodgers on Thursday that the team will be "moving in a different direction at quarterback" in 2025.
Analysis
Rodgers' tenure in New York comes to a conclusion after two years as a starter, with his first year having been limited to a mere handful of snaps before the veteran tore an Achilles tendon. The Jets' decision to move on from him was anticipated, but making the announcement official early in the offseason could make it easier for the 41-year-old quarterback to find a landing spot. Rodgers has one season remaining on the three-year contract he signed with the Jets in July 2023, which positions New York for a cap hit of $49 million in dead money if he were to be released. If he were cut with a post-June 1 designation, the team could opt to more flexibly split up his $49 million in dead money over the next two seasons. Rodgers racked up a solid 3,897 passing yards with a 28:11 TD:INT, across 17 appearances in 2024.
The Jets aren't expected to retain Rodgers as their starting quarterback for next season, and a resolution is likely to be reached "sooner rather than later," Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports.
Analysis
It's been a tumultuous two seasons in New York for Rodgers -- he tore his Achilles three offensive snaps into the 2023 regular season, then performed below expectations in 2024. Though the future Hall of Famer did manage to put up a respectable 3,897 passing yards with a 63 percent completion rate and 28:11 TD:INT over 17 contests during the current campaign, his performance level was inconsistent from game to game, and the Jets compiled a 5-12 record. Rodgers has one year remaining on the three-year deal he signed in July 2023 (the contract also has four void years, which begin in 2026), and New York will take on $49 million of dead-cap money if the team elects to part ways with him, but that doesn't appear to be enough of a deterrent to prevent the Jets from going in another direction. Schultz does note that "further discussions" are likely to take place between Rodgers and the organization, and the QB has yet to make a definitive statement about whether he plans to continue his career next year, so there are clearly a lot of factors at play here. Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that the Jets met with Rodgers last week and informed him that they are moving on, so the most likely scenario is that Rodgers will be back for his 21st season as a pro, suiting up for a different team.
Rodgers completed 23 of 36 passes for 274 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 32-20 win over the Dolphins. He finishes the season with 3,897 passing yards and a 28:11 TD:INT.
Analysis
Rodgers' first touchdown pass was the 500th of his NFL career. That one was a five-yard pass to Tyler Conklin in the second quarter, and Rodgers added a 13-yard touchdown pass to Allen Lazard in the final minute of the first half. Rodgers tacked on fourth-quarter touchdowns of four yards to Davante Adams and six yards to Breece Hall, as the fifth quarterback in NFL history to throw 500 regular-season touchdown passes raised his career total to 503. It's possible this was the final game of Rodgers' illustrious career, and even more likely his final game with the Jets. Per Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, a reflective Rodgers didn't provide definitive word on his future after this rare sweet spot capped a mostly bitter season.
