The Giants are shifting their interest in a potential veteran quarterback to Rodgers, following the development of Matthew Stafford and the Rams agreeing to terms on a restructured contract Friday, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Russini reports New York and Rodgers have discussed a union all week at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. Rodgers' primary interest was in the Rams, per a recent report from Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, but with that option now off the table, the 41-year-old signal-caller will have to consider other possibilities. With the Giants, Rodgers would have the opportunity to pair with a young standout wide receiver in Malik Nabers, who, as a rookie working with a combination of Daniel Jones, Drew Lock. Tommy DeVito and Tim Boyle, managed to put together a 109-1,204-7 receiving line across 15 games in 2024. The team additionally has the available cap space to potentially bring in Davante Adams to join Rodgers, a development both players have expressed interest in. Neither Rodgers nor Adams has yet been let go by the Jets, but their respective releases seem like a foregone conclusion.
Rodgers is interested in playing for the Rams in 2025 and would attempt to bring Davante Adams with him to Los Angeles, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis
Rodgers hasn't yet been let go by the Jets, but he's reportedly already working to find a new team as his release is a foregone conclusion. As for the Rams, there's been a whole lot of trade chatter around Matthew Stafford, with the team and quarterback at odds over his contract. Rodgers would come much cheaper, and trading Stafford could allow the Rams to add premium draft capital. However, at this stage of their respective careers, going from Stafford to Rodgers would have to be considered a downgrade for Sean McVey's offense, even if the cost savings and shorter-term commitment might be appealing. As for Adams, he's also expected to be let go by New York in the coming weeks. With Cooper Kupp headed out the door in L.A., Adams would make sense as a running mate for Puka Nacua. Stafford is the big veteran quarterback domino the rest of the league is waiting on to fall, whether that's a trade or a new deal to stay with the Rams.
Rodgers recently said he's more likely to continue his football career if he can find a good team that really wants him, NFL.com's Kevin Patra reports.
Analysis
That's more difficult than it sounds, especially after Rodgers' unsuccessful tenure in New York. The Jets have already informed him they're "moving in a different direction", and with minimal chance of trade interest it's only a matter of time until he's released. The teams most likely to consider signing the 41-year-old QB aren't the ones generally considered to be "good," and Rodgers may end up looking at a short list of suitors even if he's flexible on his stated criteria. A couple of the teams that theoretically might have interest would probably prefer to see what happens in free agency and the NFL Draft before settling for Rodgers as their Week 1 starter in 2025.
The Jets officially informed Rodgers on Thursday that the team will be "moving in a different direction at quarterback."
Analysis
Rodgers' tenure in New York comes to a conclusion after two years as a starter, with his first year having been limited to a mere handful of regular-season snaps before the storied veteran suffered an Achilles tear. The Jets' decision to move on was anticipated, but making the announcement official early in the offseason could make it easier for the 41-year-old quarterback to find an alternate opportunity. Rodgers has one season remaining on the three-year contract he signed with the Jets in July 2023, which positions New York for a cap hit of $49 million in dead money if he were to be released. If he were cut with a post-June 1 designation, the team could opt to more flexibly split up his $49 million in dead money over the next two seasons. Rodgers racked up a solid 3,897 passing yards, with a 28:11 TD:INT, across 17 regular-season appearances in 2024.
The Jets aren't expected to retain Rodgers as their starting quarterback for next season, and a resolution is likely to be reached "sooner rather than later," Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports.
Analysis
It's been a tumultuous two seasons in New York for Rodgers -- he tore his Achilles three offensive snaps into the 2023 regular season, then performed below expectations in 2024. Though the future Hall of Famer did manage to put up a respectable 3,897 passing yards with a 63 percent completion rate and 28:11 TD:INT over 17 contests during the current campaign, his performance level was inconsistent from game to game, and the Jets compiled a 5-12 record. Rodgers has one year remaining on the three-year deal he signed in July 2023 (the contract also has four void years, which begin in 2026), and New York will take on $49 million of dead-cap money if the team elects to part ways with him, but that doesn't appear to be enough of a deterrent to prevent the Jets from going in another direction. Schultz does note that "further discussions" are likely to take place between Rodgers and the organization, and the QB has yet to make a definitive statement about whether he plans to continue his career next year, so there are clearly a lot of factors at play here. Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that the Jets met with Rodgers last week and informed him that they are moving on, so the most likely scenario is that Rodgers will be back for his 21st season as a pro, suiting up for a different team.
Rodgers completed 23 of 36 passes for 274 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 32-20 win over the Dolphins. He finishes the season with 3,897 passing yards and a 28:11 TD:INT.
Analysis
Rodgers' first touchdown pass was the 500th of his NFL career. That one was a five-yard pass to Tyler Conklin in the second quarter, and Rodgers added a 13-yard touchdown pass to Allen Lazard in the final minute of the first half. Rodgers tacked on fourth-quarter touchdowns of four yards to Davante Adams and six yards to Breece Hall, as the fifth quarterback in NFL history to throw 500 regular-season touchdown passes raised his career total to 503. It's possible this was the final game of Rodgers' illustrious career, and even more likely his final game with the Jets. Per Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, a reflective Rodgers didn't provide definitive word on his future after this rare sweet spot capped a mostly bitter season.
Rodgers will start next Sunday's Week 18 game against Miami, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis
New York has little to play for aside from draft slotting given its 4-12 record, but it appears the team's starters will still suit up for the season finale. The Jets will be going up against a motivated Dolphins team that must win in order to keep its long-shot playoff hopes alive. Rodgers remains one touchdown pass away from 500 in his illustrious career, and Sunday could mark his final appearance as a Jet if, as expected, the team decides to go in a different direction this offseason.
Rodgers completed 12 of 18 passes for 112 yards and two interceptions in Sunday's 40-14 loss to the Bills.
Analysis
The Jets' first two drives both got inside Buffalo's 25-yard line, but the first ended in a turnover on downs and the second ended in a Rodgers interception. Rodgers was then sacked for a safety on the following drive as the Jets took a 12-0 deficit into the locker room. Things got even worse in the second half, as Rodgers was picked off again in the third quarter, and the Jets turned to Tyrod Taylor after taking a 33-0 deficit into the fourth quarter. Rodgers remains stuck on 499 career regular-season touchdown passes, and he'll have one last chance to throw No. 500 this season against the Dolphins in Week 18.
Rodgers (knee) was a full participant in Thursday's practice, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis
Rodgers' availability for a Week 17 matchup with the Bills initially appeared to be in some question after he disclosed Tuesday that he suffered an MCL injury in this past Sunday's loss to the Rams. However, after he was listed as a full participant on Wednesday's practice estimate, Rodgers got back on the field for an actual practice session Thursday to put to rest any concerns about his status heading into Sunday. Though Rodgers seems set to playing all 17 games in 2024 after tearing his Achilles tendon just a few snaps into the 2023 season, he'll be working behind a depleted offensive line the rest of the way. He may also be without the services of his most-trusted target in wideout Davante Adams (hip), who has missed the first two Week 17 practices to put his status for Sunday's game in Buffalo in some jeopardy.
