The NFL trade deadline is fast approaching on November 10th. Between now and then, front offices will be pulling film from one department, stats from another, and contract numbers from a third, all while calls keep coming and one injury can change your priorities overnight.
SūmerSports puts film, frame-level data, and contracts in one platform, built by people who’ve worked the deadline from the inside, so evaluating trade scenarios takes minutes rather than days. Here’s how teams handle the deadline today, and how our technology changes it.
The Football Problem
John Idzik, President of Football Operations
As the trade deadline approaches, every team is working it, searching for deals that make sense. At SūmerSports, we know this challenge well. Our staff includes former NFL executives, scouts and coaches who have walked in these shoes, and that experience shaped how we built our technology for the trade process.
In this article, we’ll take you up close to what that looks like: how SūmerSports enables teams to evaluate trade targets expeditiously, with film, frame-level data, and contracts in one platform, built by people who’ve worked the deadline from the inside. But before we jump in, let’s look at how teams have traditionally evaluated trade targets.
How Teams Evaluate Trades Today
Buyers have an immediate need. Maybe your starter or key role player just landed on injured reserve. Maybe a position group isn’t performing to your standards. Maybe a veteran is needed to infuse experience on a youthful roster. If you’re in the thick of a playoff race, each week is precious. Time is not your ally, and you may not be able to wait. For the buyer, the deadline is tactical in nature.
Sellers are thinking about the future. Maybe the season hasn’t quite gone your way. Or maybe a young player emerged faster than expected, and now you have unanticipated depth at a position that other teams are desperate to fill. Maybe there is a need for your club to trim some contractual commitments. Rather than hold on to someone who is in the final year of their contract or potentially may not even finish the year on your roster, you can turn that player into draft capital. For the seller, the deadline is usually more strategic in nature.
That’s why most deadline deals are player for picks rather than player for player. We’ve seen how much these moves can matter. Last season, Seattle traded for a speedy receiver and return specialist from New Orleans right before the deadline. Rashid Shaheed became a key piece of their Super Bowl run, and the Seahawks eventually signed him to a multi-year deal. On the other hand, facing an expiring contract, New Orleans came away with valuable draft capital instead of merely a few more weeks of active games. Not bad compensation for an undrafted player who gave the Saints 3+ seasons of production. Both teams got what they needed. Both teams won.
The window is short. Time is of the essence. After November 10th, your options shrink. By rule there are no more sellers, and buying options are reduced to waiver claims and street free agents, whose immediate contributions may not measure up to a player currently on an active roster.
Today, most teams handle this with internal analysis and working with multiple departments to arrive at a consensus. They review who’s deep and who’s thin, study which GMs have a history of dealing, and pull film separately. It works, but it takes time, and time is exactly what you don’t have.
The Sūmer Experience
Shawn Butler, SVP of Sales and Strategic Partnerships
John described the challenge. Our job isn’t to replace the process teams already use. It’s to make that process faster, easier, and more efficient.
SūmerSports brings film, frame-level data, and contracts together, giving teams a complete view of every player. Comprehensively searching a trade target literally takes minutes, so teams get the right information faster and land the talent they need.
Three things set us apart, and each one answers a deadline problem:
1. Frame-by-frame analytics: what was happening at every moment of the play.
Our models evaluate every play ten times a second, and at each moment they answer the questions a scout asks on film: is pressure getting home, where is the ball going, who is going to make the tackle. That lets us count things that never show up in play-level charting. We can count how often a quarterback escapes a sack the model already had as likely, and what his throws after those escapes are worth. We can count how often a defender was the most likely tackler and didn't finish the play. Moments like these separate players at the deadline, but finding them usually takes weeks of film. With Sūmer, you get them in minutes.
2. Charting with a confidence score: know which calls are clear and which are close.
Charting tells you whether a play had pressure, what the coverage was, whether it was play action. Usually that's a yes or no, and somebody made a judgment call on the close ones. We chart the same things, but every call comes with how sure we are. A rusher in the quarterback's lap is a 98% pressure. A rusher who gets close but never really affects the throw might be 55%. So when two edge rushers have the same pressure total, you can see which one got there on clear wins and which one got there on close calls. You can also pull up just the close calls and watch them yourself.
3. LLM-based AI built for football: answers in seconds.
SūmerBrain is our AI engine, built specifically for football and connected to far richer data than general-purpose LLMs. Ask in plain language, for example “Show me five wide receivers who fit our offense.” Or find me an experienced QB we could acquire before the deadline,” and get the stats, the reasoning and links to the film. With a short window, you can screen the whole league in the time it used to take to study one player.
Built for the deadline window:
- The film you need, right away. Looking for a pass rusher? See his pass-rush snaps and nothing else.
- Always current. Our data updates as soon as games end, so you’re working with the latest information this weekend, next weekend and right up to the deadline.
Your workflow, your choice. Every path leads to the same data and film:
- SūmerBrain: Ask questions in plain language and get answers backed by data and film.
- Trade Explorer: Compare trade targets side by side within the platform.
- Automated reports: Save hours of manual gathering with a deadline-ready view generated directly from the platform.

The Deadline Won’t Wait
Trade deadline support isn’t a one-off feature. It’s one example of what our platform does every day: comprehensive data, better insight and speed when it counts.
Whether you’re buying for a playoff push or selling to build for the future, the teams that move fastest with the best information win the deadline.
